POWELL, Wyoming — Two Northwest College faculty will focus on three South American countries in a Tuesday, Sept. 29, discussion about the college’s Field Studies program, which has taken students on educational travel experiences to all corners of the globe.
The 7 p.m. program at the NWC Intercultural House is the concluding event in the college’s celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month.
Christine Garceau, a faculty member in the NWC Photographic Communication Program, and Mary Ellen Ibarra-Robinson, an associate professor of Spanish, will give an overview of the NWC Field Studies classes offered through their departments and focus on the most recent trips they’ve led to South American destinations.
After traveling to China, Paris, Vietnam and a multitude of other far-reaching places, the NWC Photo Department returned in March of this year to South America, touring Argentina and Uruguay. These excursions have provided opportunities for NWC students and community members to experience the intricacies of travel photography within the structure of a multicultural experience.
Garceau will share images and video from the trip to Uruguay and Argentina, as well as her observations about the cultures, climate and people she and her students encountered.
Ibarra-Robinson will contrast the differences students experience in Spanish language field studies classes with those of other NWC travel classes. In addition to visiting popular and historic attractions, students on these trips receive a total language and cultural immersion, living and eating with host families, attending daily Spanish classes at a language institute, and navigating day-to-day life in a Spanish-speaking region.
Her classes have traveled to Spain, Mexico, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Peru and more, most recently to Ecuador in summer 2015. Ibarra-Robinson will share images and impressions from that trip, highlighting unique experiences.
After the presentations, audience members will be treated to refreshments they might be served if they had actually traveled to the three highlighted countries.

This program is one of the events in NWC’s 2015 celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month.
