POWELL, Wyo. - The Northwest College Forensics Team sent only two debate teams to the National Parliamentary Debate Association (NPDA) Championships, March 27-30 in Stockton, Calif., but they finished with a bang.
Competing against 233 other two-person teams from across the nation, Northwest rose to sixth place out of all community colleges in attendance.
In season sweepstakes awards, which measure the success of each squad throughout the year, Northwest claimed fourth place among community colleges and 16th among all 245 two- and four-year schools that competed in parliamentary debate during the season. In the community college category, NWC took a back seat to three California schools: Orange Coast, El Camino and Moorpark.
NWC's award-winning national tournament debaters are Ben Norberg of Powell, Cali Christensen of Moroni, Utah, and Tiffani Kennedy and Pam Garman of Townsend, Mont. NWC alumni also fared well during the tournament; Jared Bressler and Brett Delaney, who now compete for the University of Wyoming, made it to the elimination rounds and won a national award.
Northwest was also recognized outside the competitors' circle when forensics coach Jeannie Hunt was elected to a two-year term as District IX representative to the NPDA. Northwest's Ben Norberg of Powell was selected as the District IX student representative. Duane Fish was honored as well by being invited to help with the tabulation room during the tournament.
The NWC forensics team will wrap up its season April 6-11 at the Phi Rho Pi National Tournament in Portland, Ore.
