POWELL, Wyo. - The Northwest College Concert Band and Powell High School Band blend their talents in a musical feast for the annual wind band spring concert Monday, April 14, in the Nelson Performing Arts Center Auditorium.
The performance starts at 7:30 p.m. Under the direction of Powell High School Band Director John Fabela, the PHS Band will perform “Dedicatory Overture” by Clifton Williams, “Sleep” by Eric Whitacre and “Festivo” by Vaclav Nelhybel.
The NWC Concert Band takes the stage under the baton of NWC Director of Bands Brad Howey, who is leaving Northwest at the end of the school year to complete his Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Idaho.
“I’ve enjoyed my time and experiences at Northwest,” he said. “But completing this next degree is a long-time passion that needs to be fulfilled.”
Howey explained the band works hard to develop a concert approach to music—a sonorous sound— that’s different than what’s heard on the radio or from a jazz band. They’ll demonstrate this in Robert W. Smith’s “By Loch and Mountain,” drawing on the highland sounds of Ireland. “At Morning’s First Light” by David Gillingham captures the serenity and beauty of daybreak as nature awakens from its sleep. “Havendance,” the first of composer David Holsinger’s “children’s dances” was written for his daughter, Haven. The driving rhythms of the piece reflect the energy of an 8-year old as she leaps and twirls through the house with dreams of becoming a ballerina.
The Powell High School Band joins the Concert Band to close the concert with Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture.”
