Mark Keierleber, co-editor of the award-winning weekly campus newspaper the Northwest Trail, was named Sept. 1 as one of three finalists for a prestigious national journalism award.
The 20-year-old journalism major from Newcastle, Wyo., was selected as a finalist for the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) organization's Reporter of the Year award for his body of work on several stories during the 2009-2010 school year.
His submitted portfolio included front-page stories on an embattled Trapper basketball player who was fighting to return to school after being suspended for trespassing; the surprise firing of popular activities director Mike Taylor; and a May 6 article on three basketball players accused of allegedly beating up a wrestling team member.
"The newspaper staff and I are incredibly proud of Mark's achievements," Trail Adviser Holly Wolcott said. "He has a strong reputation for being a solid reporter and editor, and this announcement supports that."
Established in 1921, ACP is the oldest and largest national membership organization for college student journalists with more than 20,000 students working at ACP member publications.
The winners of all ACP awards, including Reporter of the Year for a two-year college, will be announced at the organization's annual convention Oct. 27-31 in Louisville, Ky.
