POWELL, Wyo. - Three Northwest College music groups preview their fall repertoire of works in progress at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 9, in the Hinckley Library Amphitheater.
Over the past 15 years, local concert goers have become well acquainted with the Choral Sampler, like the continual ebb and flow of the tide, sunrise, sunset and seasons of the year.
Unlike previous years, however, Jan Kliewer will direct the NWC College Choir in a few “cutting edge” choral compositions. “These are new pieces I discovered at a choral workshop I attended this summer,” he said. “They’re from well-known composers, are state-of-the art and showcase the current fashion and style of choral music.”
He added, “No promises, but the choir may also preview a movement or two from our major project this semester—Handel’s “Messiah”—which we’ll perform December 15 with the Northwest Civic Orchestra and Master Chorale.”
The mood changes considerably under the direction of Craig Olson, when Vocal Jazz I (Studio Singers) and Vocal Jazz II take the spotlight for the second half of the concert. Vocal Jazz I tunes include “Down at Smokey Joe’s” and “Alice in Wonderland.” Vocal Jazz II marks its inaugural year with “Mr. Jazz Man.”
Kliewer noted that because there was considerable interest from music majors and non-majors, Vocal Jazz II was added to the curriculum.
