MASTER Scholar applications accepted through April 1

POWELL, Wyo. - Over the next four years, Northwest College will invest over a quarter of a million dollars in scholarships and academic support for students interested in studying science, thanks to a grant from the National Science Foundation.

"This is great time to be entering college if you're interested in science and especially if you need financial aid to cover college costs," said John Campbell a professor of biological sciences at Northwest. Campbell and Taten Sheridan, NWC's grant writer, designed the MASTER Scholar Program and submitted the grant application that generated more than $276,000 in support from the National Science Foundation.

The MASTER Scholar Program provides much more than scholarship dollars. Students accepted to the program will become part of a cohort of science students who support each other with joint studies. They'll have special access to faculty mentors and explore the sciences through extra workshops and other activities. Plus, they enroll in a class and seminar program designed expressly for them.

"The study of science is a demanding one at the college level, even for the brightest students" Campbell said. "Our MASTER Scholars will have a distinct advantage when it comes to staying on track with their classes and goals."

The program is open to both freshmen and sophomores. The scholarship value varies according to the financial need of the applicant and may range from $200 to the total cost of attendance. The scholarships are good for four semesters providing students maintain eligibility requirements.

Northwest offers a broad range of science studies that qualify for the MASTER Scholar program, including agroecology, biology, chemistry, drafting technology, engineering, mathematics, occupational safety and health, natural resource biology and physics.

"I encourage any student studying for a career that focuses on these fields to apply for the program," Campbell said. "No matter where they want to finish their college education, I don't think they can find a better way to ensure a successful start than with this program."

Funds for the MASTER Scholar Program are limited and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis until exhausted. Applications will be accepted no later than April 1.
