The Northwest College Photography Department is hosting an exhibition of students’ work from their recent field studies trip to Greece. An opening reception will be held in the SinClair Gallery on Tuesday, October 17, at 7 p.m., and the exhibit will remain on display through February 2024.
For the past nineteen-years the Photographic Communications program at Northwest College has lead field study trips for students and community members to locations around the world. Past field study trips have included locations such as, Colombia, Morocco, Cuba, Costa Rica, Chile, the Dominican Republic, England, Vietnam, Argentina, and Uruguay. These culturally rich photographic excursions have provided a valuable opportunity for Northwest College students to experience the intricacies of travel photography within the structure of a multinational experience.
The Yamas Greece exhibit, which translates from Greek to English loosely as Cheers to Greece, features the photographic revelations of students, faculty, and community members enrolled in the Spring 2023 Photo Fields Studies class to Greece lead this year by Dr. Christine Garceau, Associate Professor of Photography. Each image in the exhibit reflects student’s experiences of the places and people they encountered traveling through Greece, including the Acropolis in Athens, the Aegean Sea islands of Mykonos, Santorini, Delos, and Tinos.
For Northwest College sophomore Maddy Trail, from Grandby, Colorado, the architecture and food were standouts of the trip. “The whitewashed walls of the buildings on Santorini were special to see and photograph. The hike with my mother, sister, and classmate from Fira on one side of the island to Oia on the other side of the island was the main highlight of my stay on Santorini.”
For Leah Wallace, a sophomore from Basin, Wyoming, taking the ferry to the island Delos, the birthplace of Apollo really stood out. “Seeing the marble, along with all the tilling and the architectural details that were still intact after 4,000 plus years was amazing.”
Alissa Megargel of Bozeman, Montana stated the “the trip allowed me t experience a different way of living and gave me an appreciation for the life I live in my own country while still giving me the desire to visit new countries and cultures in the future.
The exhibit opens Tuesday evening October 17th at 7:00 pm in the SinClair Gallery in the Orendorff building on the campus of Northwest College. Admission is free and light refreshments will be served.
