Northwest College announces new Trapper Scholarship Program

P O W E L L,  W y o. - This fall Northwest College is implementing a new Trapper Scholarship Program that will enable prospective students to better determine right now how much college will cost if they decide to attend NWC.

Previously, it was easy to find out how much tuition, fees, books, room and board costs added up to, but trying to determine possible scholarship dollars was a guessing game until the scholarships were actually awarded. With the new Trapper Scholarship Program, high school seniors and others can determine immediately how much they can expect to receive in scholarship dollars. This capability enables students to better prepare for college by having a more realistic financial picture.

The program is available to high school, GED and home-school students. Three levels of the program are available to prospective students who graduate with their class (or complete home-schooling or GED on the same timeline as their class) and enroll full time at NWC immediately after graduating. The amount of the scholarship varies according to the student's grade point average or other qualifying criteria (GED score or ACT score for home-school students). A fourth level, called the "Explorer," is reserved for students who waited to attend college.

For eligible Wyoming students, the Trapper Scholarship combined with the Hathaway Scholarship can add up to as much as $4,400 per year for full-time students. The out-of-state Trapper Scholarship, when combined with the Western Undergraduate Exchange Program, can earn awards as high as $3,827 for eligible students.

Trapper Scholarships are guaranteed for a second year if continuing eligibility requirements are maintained. International students and students who receive athletic scholarships are not eligible.

On top of the Trapper Scholarship, students can also apply for additional academic and activity-talent scholarships at NWC's Dec. 1 Scholarship Day.  In addition, new NWC MASTER Scholar Program Scholarships are available to students majoring in agroecology, biology, chemistry, drafting technology, engineering, mathematics, natural resource biology, occupational safety and health, or physics. Funded in part by the National Science Foundation, the NWC MASTER Scholar Scholarship Program provides financial, academic and personal support to a cohort of students majoring in specific sciences.

Because funds for the Trapper Scholarship Program are finite, they will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis until exhausted. The college encourages prospective students to apply as early as possible and no later than April 1, 2009. Northwest does not award scholarship packages that exceed the cost of attendance.

To apply for the scholarships, students must first complete an NWC online application for admissions, and then an online scholarship application.
