POWELL, Wyo. - Mark Keierleber, a 2009 Newcastle High School graduate, earned national honors in October as a student journalist at Northwest College in Powell.
Keierleber placed second in the nation against all other two-year college journalists for the Reporter of the Year Award at the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) and College Media Advisers (CMA) national convention in Louisville, Ky.
Keierleber is co-editor for the Trail, the college’s student-produced newspaper. His work was also a major force in winning the 2010 College Press Freedom Award, given to only one school in the nation each year.
The award recognized the Trail’s grit and fortitude in covering several campus news events last year, including an employee termination, targeted recruitment letter to LDS students and the creation of the new soccer program. The award is sponsored by the ACP and the Student Press Law Center, the nation’s primary nonprofit advocating for students’ free-press rights.
“This was a huge accomplishment and goal for me,” Keierleber said. “I think that although Northwest College is a small community of people, news happens here and it’s important for our readers to know that.”
The Trail also picked up second place in the Best of Show category, which judges one copy of the paper from the current semester. Keielbeber’s contributions also factored in this award.
This isn’t Keierleber’s first journalism recognition. Last year, he received a Pacemaker award from the Wyoming Press Association for his photography.
He is the son of Doug and Charity Keierleber of Newcastle.
Keierleber and his fellow Trail staffers will be honored at a celebration reception Thursday, Nov. 11, on campus.
