POWELL, Wyo. - The smells, tastes, sights and sounds from countries around the world will fill the bottom floor of the DeWitt Student Center at Northwest College from 1-3:30 p.m., Saturday, April 12. Entrance to the Multicultural Showcase is through the Trapper Room off of Seventh Street.
The annual showcase offers homemade food samples from around the globe, live entertainment, a silent auction and colorful display of masks and collectibles from countries on nearly every continent.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for the surrounding communities to experience an afternoon of diverse cultures,” said Emelee Volden, intercultural program manager. “Students from around the world and around the U.S. will be sharing their cultures through food and performance. This event is a unique opportunity for college and community members to enjoy the diversity of Northwest College. We hope to see everyone there.”
The event is co-hosted by the NWC Multicultural Club, Student Senate, Office of Intercultural Programs and the Diversity Awareness Committee.
The afternoon festivities are geared for the whole family, with displays and activities for all ages. This year’s showcase will feature masks from around the world. Anyone wishing to lend a mask for the display should take it to Emelee Volden in Room 129 of the Orendorff Building by Friday, April 11. Please include contact information, a bit of background about the mask and where it’s from.
Inside the dining hall, attendees can wander from booth to booth sampling recipes prepared by students from the United States, Saudi Arabia, Ukraine, Korea, Brazil, Romania, Mexico, Vietnam and many other countries in Asia, Europe, Africa and Latin America.
Visual feasts are offered in live entertainment from Chilean students and the NWC Glee Club.
Admission is free. Tickets to sample food are $1 each and college students with proof of ID will get five tickets free.
Proceeds from the silent auction will go toward a diversity scholarship for Northwest College students as well as a donation to Handicap International.
Donations for the silent auction are welcome and can also be dropped off in Room 129 of the Orendorff Building.
