POWELL, Wyo. ─ The smells, tastes, sights and sounds from countries around the world will fill the bottom floor of the DeWitt Student Center at Northwest College from 1-3:30 p.m., Saturday, April 11. Entrance to the Multicultural Showcase is through the Trapper Room off of Seventh Street.
The annual showcase offers homemade food samples from around the globe, live entertainment, a silent auction and a colorful display of cinematic collectibles showcasing multiculturalism through film.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for the surrounding communities to experience an afternoon of diverse cultures,” said Emelee Volden, intercultural program manager. “Students from around the world and around the U.S. will be sharing their cultures through food and performance. This event is a unique opportunity for college and community members to enjoy the diversity of Northwest College. We hope to see everyone there.”
The afternoon festivities are geared for the whole family, with displays and activities for all ages. This year’s showcase theme is “In Moving Pictures: Celebrating the Diversity of Global Movie Making.” Anyone wishing to lend display items to help celebrate the visually rich imagery and diversity associated with cinema should take them to Emelee Volden in Room 129 of the Orendorff Building by Thursday, April 9. Please include contact information, a bit of background about the item and where it’s from.
Inside the dining hall, attendees can wander from booth to booth sampling recipes prepared by students from Ghana, Saudi Arabia, Ukraine, Korea, Brazil, Serbia, Mexico, Vietnam and many other countries in Asia, Europe, Africa and Latin America.
Visual feasts are offered in live entertainment from American, Chilean, and other international students.
Admission is free. Tickets to sample food are $1 each; college students with proof of ID will get five tickets free.
Proceeds from the silent auction will go toward Northwest College’s Study Abroad Scholarship, open to students participating on faculty-led programs.
Donations for the silent auction are welcome and can also be dropped off in Room 129 of the Orendorff Building.
