P O W E L L, W y o. - The Northwest College Worland Center for Training and Development is "springing" into the change of seasons with four computer-related trainings starting in March and the first week in April. On tap in the coming month is an Introduction to Computers, plus classes in Access, Excel, PowerPoint and troubleshooting QuickBooks.

The lineup starts with an "Introduction to Computers" class that meets from 6-8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, March 6-15. The class is designed for anyone who would like to get a handle on computer fundamentals, utilize word processing and acquire some Internet basics. Participants will work through a series of exercises in four evenings to become familiar with basic computer terminology, plus hardware and software that is essential to computer users in today's world of technology.

They'll learn how to utilize the settings and elements of the operating system, weigh factors in purchasing a computer, access online help and many other basic computer functions. Then they focus on word processing skills for everyday use. Students also learn about e-mailing, Web-browsing, searching and many other features needed to move around on the World Wide Web. Cost is $60 per person and includes a comprehensive manual.

The Access database program gets the Fast Track Friday treatment from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, March 9, with instructor Amy Lamm. Instead of meeting a couple evenings a week, participants in this workshop get a full introduction to the basics of Access in one all-day session that includes setting up a basic database design structure using tables and queries. Cost is $60 and includes a comprehensive manual.

Under Lamm's instruction, students will learn to build databases; use forms, filters, queries and reports to capture and analyze data; work with relational databases and learn how to prevent data corruption and unauthorized access.

QuickBooks users who have problems getting things to work out right are invited to find solutions in a QuickBooks Troubleshooting class taught in one 9 a.m.-4 p.m. session, Saturday, March 17. Instructor Lynne Whitmore, a certified public accountant, will address the specific problems identified by participants when they sign up for the class. She wants participants to bring a balance sheet as of Dec. 31, 2006, and a profit/loss statement from 2006. Cost is $40.

Lamm will teach a Fast Track Basic Excel class from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, March 20 and 22. Participants learn through a hands-on course of study and receive a comprehensive manual to refer to afterwards. They start by learning to customize Excel and how to use toolbars. In addition to creating a worksheet and entering formulas into cells, they'll also add charts to a worksheet, use Excel as a database, and save and print documents. Cost is $60 per person.

Lamm returns in April to teach a PowerPoint class that meets from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, April 3 and 5. The class is formatted so each participant sits at a computer to learn the fundamentals of PowerPoint design. Participants receive a hands-on course of study in building presentation, formatting slides, using the draw tools and working with graphics. Cost is $60 per person and includes a comprehensive manual.
