POWELL, Wyoming — Johnny Tim Yellowtail will offer more than jewelry-making tips when he teaches a “Make It and Take It: Native American Choker Night” Wednesday, March 30, at Northwest College’s Intercultural House.
Yellowtail will give a hands-on demonstration in making Native American choker necklaces while explaining the piece’s heritage and genesis as a functional part of a warrior’s armor.
Originally made from bone, horn and shells, the necklace’s symbolisms and ornamentation depend on tribal customs. Yellowtail will share those he learned growing up as a member of the Crow Nation raised in the Apsáalooke ways.
All supplies are provided, and participants will select the materials and design they want to use in their necklaces.
The program starts at 6 p.m. and is free to everyone. It is sponsored by NWC Intercultural Programs.
