POWELL, Wyo. - Susan Richards, a historian, librarian and writer, will share excerpts from her written work and from the work of others at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, in the Hinckley Library Amphitheater at Northwest College in Powell. She is the second featured author in the NWC 2009-10 Writers Series.
In addition to writing, Richards reads of a wide range of fiction and nonfiction for enjoyment, and not just because librarians work with books, she says. She'll share from her favorite reads as well as her own writing. The latter will focus mostly on historical articles, including one she wrote about a mining engineer who made South Dakota's history a little more interesting.
The work she'll share from other authors will feature her favorite first page and favorite novel.
Richards has been the Northwest College library director since 2005. Before coming to Powell, she worked at college and university libraries in Wisconsin, Colorado and Vermont.
She's published scholarly articles in Journal of the West, Prologue, Vermont History, and South Dakota History. Her published works and lectures carry titles like "An Iron Hand in a Velvet Glove: Thomas J. Grier's Management of the Homestake Mine, 1885-1914," "Making Home Pay: Boardinghouse Keepers in Barre, 1880-1918," "Women of the Colorado Frontier" and "On Account of Sex: An Annotated Bibliography on the Status of Women in Librarianship, 1993-1997."
Richards holds a master's degree in library science plus a master's and a doctorate in history.
