POWELL, Wyoming — Northwest College continues its celebration of Native American Heritage Month with a Fry Bread Lunch and cooking demonstration at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, in the Intercultural House (565 College Drive).
Marenda Bearshield, NWC’s Native American cultural adviser, will demonstrate how to make fry bread from scratch using a recipe handed down in her family through at least five generations.
A full-blooded member of the Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma, Bearshield said making fry bread is much more than a cooking exercise in her family and in the Native American culture as a whole.
“When we make fry bread, we’re praying. Praying over our families, our village, our schools. We’re praying for health and for prosperity. We’re reaching into our souls to knead our history and our hopes into the food that will nurture our families, our futures. It’s a beautiful thing, a celebration of this time we spend with our creator.”
After the fry bread is made, attendees will be treated to a lunch of the bread with homemade soup and stew.
This Fry Bread Lunch is just one of the events scheduled at Northwest College during its celebration of Native American Heritage Month.
