POWELL, Wyo. — Blogging is becoming increasing important to those who want to succeed as students, in business or in matters of influencing others on a large scale. But writing for digital media takes more than just good writing principles.
With that in mind, Renee Dechert, an English professor at Northwest College, will teach a class on blogging during the fall 2014 semester to help students and community members learn the ins and outs of this increasingly popular communication venue.
Her “Writing for Digital Media” class meets from 2-3:15 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays beginning Aug. 25.
It concentrates on the theory and practice of interactive writing and the creation of meaning in digital media. Students will also cultivate skills in content development and design.
“I’m most interested in the ways in which blogging and technology affect writing,” Dechert said. “The principles of good writing remain the same: good research, clear writing, effective organization, correct grammar. However, audience as we’ve traditionally understood it radically changes because now, a blogger’s audience is the entire world. This is also a form businesses are using to promote products, and it has great potential.”
Dechert said students in the class will create blogs that will be open to readers all over the world. They’ll practice blogging throughout the semester on a topic they’re interested in or experts on. They’ll also explore ways to increase readership, which includes using social media.
Students will learn to create and maintain active accounts for their blog, plus Facebook, Google+, YouTube, Twitter and Instagram.
The three-credit “Writing for Digital Media” class fulfills a humanities requirement for graduation. It can be taken for credit or be audited. Tuition and standard fees are $105 per credit for Wyoming residents, but other fees may apply.
