POWELL, Wyo. - The Northwest College Studio Singers and Jazz Band I present their annual Jazz Showcase at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, in the Nelson Performing Arts Center Auditorium.
NWC welcomes guest artist and trumpeter Byron Stripling who’ll perform a number of works with the NWC jazz groups during the concert. While on campus, he’ll also conduct workshops for students in the music department and schools around the community.
Currently the artistic director and conductor of the Ohio-based Columbus Jazz Orchestra, Stripling has a long history of performance with jazz and big bands. Since his 1989 performance with the Boston Pops and conductor John Williams, he’s made numerous acclaimed appearances with orchestras throughout the country. An in-demand favorite for pops concerts around the world, Stripling also tours with his own quartet of outstanding musicians. His visit is sponsored by the Wyoming Arts Council.
Craig Olson directs the Studio Singers in a lineup of improvisation and tunes including “Crusin’ Down the Center Lane” by Ken Kraintz, “Love Will Keep Us Together” by Elin Carlson and a Kirby Shaw arrangement of “I’m Comin’ Home, Baby.”
The Northwest Jazz Band I, directed by Brad Howey, performs “Walk, Don't Run” arranged by Quincy Jones; “Jada” arranged by Oliver Nelson; “Crystal Cove” by Patty Darling; “St. James Infirmary” arranged by Tom Davis and “Red Clay” arranged by Mark Taylor.
