P O W E L L, W y o. - Registration is now open to Big Horn Basin residents who would like to participate in a community drumming class led by the Drum Brothers, a world music group visiting Powell Feb. 22-24 for a three-day residency at Northwest College.
The class will meet at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, in the Nelson Performing Arts Center Auditorium. Aspiring and veteran drummers of all ages are invited to "celebrate the rhythms of life and the joy of community music-making."
The cost of the class is $16 per person, but the NWC Multicultural Committee is offering partial scholarships of $10 each to the first10 participants who register. Drums will be available for those who don't own one. To register, call Beverly Rivard at (307) 254-1337.
The Park County Arts Council, in partnership with the Wyoming Arts Council and the Northwest College Multicultural Committee, is underwriting the Drum Brothers residency. The Missoula, Mont., ensemble is known for its high-energy performances featuring close harmony vocals and a diverse mix of world instruments that includes West African djembe and doun-doun drums, Middle Eastern udu and frame drums, Australian didgeridoos, acoustic guitar, flute and hand percussion. Their repertoire features a potpourri of ethnic and contemporary sounds in both original arrangements and pieces from the world songbook.
The Drum Brothers have inspired audiences to dance in the aisles and engage in other related phenomenon at performances across the northeastern United States and Canada. The four-member ensemble has led classes and drum circles for all ages since the early 1990s.
The Drum Brothers residency at NWC culminates Saturday, Feb. 24, with a 7:30 p.m. community concert in the Nelson Performing Arts Center auditorium. Tickets will cost $8 for adults and $5 for seniors, students, and children. They'll be available at the door and in advance at area businesses later in February.
