CODY, Wyo. - A 56-hour training course for earning a U.S. Coast Guard OUPV License will start Monday, April 20, at the Northwest College Cody Center for Training and Development.
Fishing and sightseeing charters must hold an OUPV License in order to charge for passengers. The OUPV (6-Pack) license, which allows holders to carry up to six paying passengers, is portable and can be used in other areas of the country when local weather isn't hospitable for boating.
This U.S. Coast Guard training covers rules of the road, radio operations, survival techniques, distress signaling, terminology, equipment, personal floatation devices, seamanship, anchoring, aids to navigation, charting, navigation, boat registration and documentation, knot tying and more.
The class meets April 20-May 9 from 6-10 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Fridays and from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays. Testing will start at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 9. This course and its instructor are under the approval of Zenith Maritime, LLC.
Instructor Mark Garrison is owner and operator of Hidden Treasure Charters, a local charter company that operates on Yellowtail Reservoir in the summer and in the British Virgin Islands in the winter and spring. His experience spans several years in the maritime industry and two years with Zenith Maritime as an approved Coast Guard instructor and adviser.
Cost is $1,095 and includes the testing fee.
