POWELL, Wyo. - Aspiring truck drivers can learn to drive truck for local businesses, agriculture or the oil and gas industry in a Class A CDL Truck Driver Training course Feb. 17-March 28.
The training provides tractor-trailer driving fundamentals to students who have minimal or no truck-driving experience. Graduates can expect to have in hand the essential knowledge and practical skills to qualify for entry-level, supervised over-the-road or in-town positions driving tractor-trailers, heavy duty trucks, dump trucks and medium-sized delivery trucks.
Registration deadline is Friday, Jan. 17.
Truck-driving skills and knowledge will be developed through 104 hours of classroom instruction and hands-on lab time, 14 hours of independent study, 30 hours behind-the-wheel training and the two-hour Wyoming CDL Exam. Classroom hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays. Driving times can be scheduled anytime during the day or evenings and on weekends. All behind-the-wheel training is provided with one student per truck.
Classroom instruction focuses on defensive driving, pre- and post-trip vehicle inspection, coupling and uncoupling, vehicle systems and controls, driver communications, speed and space management, visual search techniques, backing and employer relations.
Behind-the-wheel instruction includes backing and parking, braking and slowing, proper turns, basic control, emergency equipment, coupling/uncoupling and vehicle inspection.
Workforce Development Training Grants are available to help businesses with the cost of training drivers. Because of the high volume of grant applications, early submissions are encouraged. Businesses seeking grant assistance to help cover the cost of driver training must apply before Jan. 15.
