P O W E L L, W y o. - The 1st Infantry Division Brass Quintet of the United States Army will stop in Powell Monday, March 31, to perform in a 7:30 p.m. concert in the Nelson Performing Arts Center Auditorium at Northwest College.
Unlike most other military band concerts, advance tickets are not available. This concert is a first-come, first-seated event.
The quintet is a subunit of the 1st Infantry Division Band (known as the Big Red One) based out of Fort Riley, Kan. The Big Red One's mission is to represent the 1st Infantry Division at military ceremonies and in communities that support American soldiers.
The 38-member band frequently entertains audiences with light overtures, marches, show tunes and big band music of the 40s and 50s.
Predictably, the quintet's scope is a little more limited. Their repertoire, however, doesn't lack on the foot-tapping meter with songs like "Can Can," "Bugler's Holiday," the polka from "Hornsmoke," "Tuba Tiger Rag," the overture to "The Barber of Seville" and "Just a Closer Walk with Thee." And because no army unit concert is complete without something from Sousa, the quintet also performs "Semper Fidelis," as well as three preludes from Gershwin.
Admission is free.
While the quintet is in Powell, they'll also conduct a master class for NWC students at 1 p.m. Monday, March 31, in the Nelson Performing Arts Center Auditorium.
