POWELL, Wyo. - Arizona ceramist Angel Luna will be in Powell Wednesday, Feb. 3, to talk about his work at a 7:30 p.m. artist's reception for his "Miracles, People and Monsters" exhibit in Northwest Gallery.
Luna will talk about the processes he employees in creating his art and the themes he focused on for this show, which also goes by the Spanish title "Milagros, Gente y Monstros."
As a Mexican-American who originally worked in the fields, Luna believes that working the soil served as his inspiration for working with clay. He makes his own brushes to use on the blank canvases of his pottery, then fires his stoneware and pottery in the high-fire range. Although his work is influenced by the traditions of Mexico and Japan, he also works in the American Raku style.
Luna, a professor of fine art at Arizona Western College in Yuma, attended Whitworth College and East Washington College before completing his master's degree at the University of Idaho.
His solo exhibits have been held mostly in the West, but his work has been shown across the United States in invitational exhibitions, with shows in Chicago, New York, Pittsburgh, and in states as disparate as Massachusetts, Georgia and Virginia.
In addition to his discussion in the gallery, Luna will give presentations in Northwest College art classes the following day.
Northwest Gallery is located in the Cabre Building on the Northwest College campus. It's open from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. weekdays plus 7-9 p.m. Thursdays. Admission is free.
