POWELL, Wyo. - Veterans are invited to Northwest College in early August to learn how the college can assist them in their educational pursuits.
Sessions devoted specifically to veterans are planned as part of NWC’s New Student Registration session on Friday, Aug. 5, according to Student Success Programs Manager and Counselor Cynthia Garhart.
“We’re very interested in assisting area vets and helping them know what programs and services are available to them at Northwest College,” Garhart explained. “We want to do whatever we can to be a resource for them as they plan their futures.”
The session begins with a continental breakfast and check-in at 7:45 a.m. in the lobby of the Science and Mathematics Building on Seventh St.
A 9 a.m. presentation on financial aid is followed by specific veterans information from 9:30-until noon in room 104 of the Science and Mathematics Building.
Three presenters will provide a variety of information for vets—Gerald Swan of the Wyoming Veterans Service Office; Cory Severeide, case manager from the VA Medical Center in Sheridan, who coordinates activities for Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom and traumatic brain injury; and Terry L. Stanclift LPC, regional in-home therapist for veterans and their families. They’ll discuss the GI Bill, Post 911, summer benefits, reservists’ status and vocational rehabilitation.
G.I. Bill applications can be completed on site that day, Garhart said.
NWC employees from the Student Affairs Office will then cover college-related topics such as course credits, housing, family benefits, scholarships and financial aid, and official certification.
The remainder of the morning is devoted to student services presentations for all students and family members attending the New Student Registration session, including information about the Student Success Center, Bookstore and Hinckley Library.
An 11:30 a.m. lunch is planned, followed by campus tours. Those who wish to take math and English placement tests may do so at 12:30 p.m.
