POWELL, Wyo. - Brass musicians from across the region will perform together in a 7 p.m. concert Saturday, Feb. 5, in the Nelson Performing Arts Center auditorium at Northwest College in Powell.
The free performance is the culminating event of a day-long Trumpet and Trombone Festival.
Featured solo artists are United States Air Force Staff Sgt. Chris Hammiel and Anthony Hammond.
Hammiel is a trumpet player and music director for the U.S. Air Force Noteables jazz ensemble. He also performs on trumpet with the U.S. Air Force’s Concert Band, Ceremonial Band and Heartland of America Band.
Originally from Ohio, Hammiel has crisscrossed the nation, both as a military player and with the Glenn Miller Orchestra. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Oklahoma and a master’s from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Hammond is director of band and jazz band at Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Mont. A Missoula native, he’s played with several professional groups including the Missoula Symphony Orchestra and the Ed Norton Big Band. He’s also a singer and trombone player in Billings' new funk band Funk In The Trunk and regularly sits in with other local jazz artists.
Hammond holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Montana.
The evening also features performances by local trumpet and trombone groups and massed choirs of festival participants. This project is supported in part by a grant from the Wyoming Arts Council, through funding from the Wyoming State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.
