Nine NWC Soccer Players Honored
Northwest College sophomore Samhia Simao was named the Region IX women’s soccer player of the year after shattering her own school record for goals scored in a single season. Simao was also one of five players named to either the women’s or men’s first team all-Region list.
Simao was joined on the women’s first team by classmate Haley Ahrenholtz out of Laramie. Both players are making their second appearance on the all-Region IX first team for the Trappers.
Named to the second team for the Trapper women was Newcastle sophomore Brandi Roetzel. Roetzel was a two-year defender for Northwest College, which advanced to within one victory of its first-ever women’s district tournament appearance this season.
For the Northwest College men’s team, which was scheduled to make its first-ever national tournament appearance on Monday afternoon, three players were named to the all- Region first team. Sophomore midfielder Dean Johnson, a native of London, England, was joined by a pair of freshmen — Glasgow, Scotland, forward Jamie McMorrow and Casper defender Marcus Couldridge — on the 2012 first team.
The Trapper men also had a second-team selection in sophomore goalkeeper Camron Stanek, another Casper native who made the decision to come play for the Trappers. Cody sophomore defender Kory Jansma and Bountiful, Utah, freshman forward Gage Woodward were each named to the honorable mention roster.
The Northwest College men’s soccer team is currently in Albany, Ga., at the NJCAA men’s soccer national championship tournament. The Trappers opened against Louisburg College on Monday afternoon in a game that had not ended when the paper went to press. The team plays at 10 a.m. today (Tuesday) against Cincinnati State Tech to close out its pool play performances.
Based on the results of those two games, the Trappers could play again on Friday as one of four national semifinalists. The tournament concludes with Saturday’s national championship game.
