NWC Men Get Just One Win Last Week
The Northwest College Trapper men’s soccer team played a trio of one-goal games last week, but came out on the winning side of just one. After defeating Western Nebraska by a 4-3 count, the Trappers fell to Laramie County 2-1 in double overtime and to No. 1 Barton 1-0.
The two latter games were both played in Cheyenne over the weekend.
In their victory, against Western Nebraska, Matheus Santos produced a hat trick of assists as he distributed the ball on three of Northwest College’s four goals. Matt Hawkins picked up the remaining assist while the goals were tallied by Alan DaCosta, Dean Johnson, Helio Junior and Leonardo Mederios.
Despite the offensive showing, the game once again was tense to the finish as Western Nebraska scored three goals.
“I don’t know what it is about that team, but we give up a ton of goals against them,” said Trapper men’s soccer coach Rob Hill, whose team scored a 7-5 win over Western Nebraska earlier in the year. “It was like that when we played at their place. It was like that last year.”
The goals came at a far slower pace over the weekend in Cheyenne. Helio Junior scored off an Adrian Elicerio cross in the second half to give the Trappers a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation against LCCC. Neither team scored in the first extra period, but the Golden Eagles produced the golden goal in the 108th minute to bring an end to the contest.
LCCC moved into the NJCAA men’s soccer rankings this week.
Northwest College also dropped a 1-0 decision against No. 1 ranked Barton out of Kansas. Despite the loss, the Trappers stayed within striking distance throughout the full 90 minutes against one of the nation’s elite programs.
The Trappers hosted Western Wyoming on Wednesday in a game that didn’t begin until 5 p.m. The team hosts LCCC, now ranked No. 16 nationally, in a Saturday, 2 p.m. rematch at Trapper Field.
