The Northwest College women’s basketball team was recognized by the National Junior College Athletics Association (NJCAA) as a 2010-2011 all-academic team. This marks the second year the Trapper program under head coach Janis Beal has received the distinction.

“I think it really says a lot about the type of student that Coach Beal is recruiting and the emphasis that she is placing on the academic side of things,” said Northwest College athletic director Andy Ward.

As a team, the Trappers compiled a 3.11 team grade point average this past season, placing it among the upper echelon of women’s junior college programs.

Additionally, six members of Trapper rosters were recognized for their individual achievements in the classroom with academic All-American designation.

Mckenzie Garrett, a member of the women’s basketball team, was honored. Volleyball team members Megann Legerski, Randi McInerney and Danielle York were all named academic All-Americans, as were men’s soccer team member Jonathan Mercado and men’s basketball team member Chantz Ramos. All six carried grade point averages of 3.75 or higher.

“We’re very proud of the student-athletes that made that distinguished group,” Ward said. “Their performance in the classroom is to be admired. They have a lot of work to do and put in a lot of time to maintain their academic standards.”
