Trappers Play Five Games In Nine Days
Northwest College men’s basketball beat both Bismarck State College and Rexburg United at last weekend’s First Bank of Wyoming Shootout.
On Friday evening, the Trappers went head-to-head against Bismarck State College and beat them 88-63.
“Really happy, the team played a lot harder on the attack,” said Brian Erickson, head coach. “Right around the 10 minute mark, we had a big change.”
Bismarck scored 34 points in the first 10 minutes to build up a 34-21 lead, but the Trappers mounted a comeback to take the lead by halftime; Northwest would hold Bismarck to only 31 more points in the final 30 minutes of the game.
In the second half, Northwest led by as many as 26 points.
The score was only tied twice in the game and the lead only changed once.
Sophomore Sukhjot Bains led the Trappers with 22 points. Next was Jonathan Koud with 20 points and Damon Leach with 13.
From the free throw line, Blake Hinze, Morgan Devonte and Koud shot 100 percent and Carter Baxter 75 percent. As a team, the Trappers made 40.5 percent of their shots from the floor, 31.3 percent of 3-point attempts and 73.1 percent on free throws.
Bains collected 15 rebounds for a double- double — having six offensive and nine defensive boards — while Leach had four offensive and six defensive for a total of 10.
Saturday’s opponent was an all-star team, Rexburg United, from Rexburg, Idaho.
Northwest picked up a 68-56 win in a game that saw six ties and two lead changes.
Koud and Levi Londole tied for high scorer with 15 points each. Bains had nine while Devonte and Skyler Zabriskie each scored seven.
Baxter was again perfect at the free throw line, going 2-for-2, while Koud was 7-for- 8.
Rebounds were pretty evenly spread across the board. Londole led with seven. Koud and Leach each had six, Bains five, Hinze and Baxter each had four and Marshall McArthur had three.
The Trappers shot 66.7 percent from the free throw line, showing improvement from their first games. On 3-point tries, the team made 37.5 percent and had a 41.1 percent showing from the floor overall.
“Didn’t play great by any means. Looked like we were beat up and a little tired,” said Erickson.
The men’s team had played five games in nine days.
Also competing at the weekend’s First Bank of Wyoming Shootout was Western Wyoming Community College, which beat Bismarck 80-59 and trumped Rexburg United 88-63.
On Saturday, the Trapper men will play in Cody at 4:30 p.m. against Game Gear, another all-star team. Admission is free, with the game held in the Cody High School gymnasium.
