The coronavirus pandemic has cast a shadow over most athletic programs in the country this spring, but Northwest College men’s basketball coach Jay Collins had reason to celebrate this week.
“Trapper men’s basketball is having a great day,” Collins said in announcing the signing of his first recruit for 2020-21.
Bryson Stephens, a 6-1 guard from Arapahoe High School in Centennial, Colorado, signed a letter of intent to enroll at NWC. He averaged 21.5 points per game and 3.6 rebounds per game in his senior year.
“He had multiple Region IX offers, and I feel like we are really lucky to get him,” Collins said.
With NWC closed and travel restricted by the virus, Stephens didn’t make it to Powell to see the campus and Collins has not had the opportunity to see the athlete live. All recruiting was virtual.
“I’ve seen him a lot on video, and based on what I’ve seen from that and talking to Northern Colorado coaches, he is very crafty and an extremely smart player,” Collins said of Stephens. “He just knows how to play.”
