The Northwest College men’s and women’s basketball teams notched road victories over Little Big Horn College in their only action of the week. The Trapper men won by an 86-70 final score while the women came out on top of a 92-61 final.
Jeffrey Solarin had 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists to lead the Trappers to their 17th victory of the year. Four other Trappers finished in double figures as well with Junior Coleman picking up 14 points. Pietro de Andrade and Gary Gordon each dropping in 11 points and Guilherme Carabagiale finishing with 10 points.
Franklin Uzonwanne narrowly missed a double-double that would have given the Trappers a sixth player in double figures for scoring. The freshman ended his night with nine points and a team-best 11 rebounds.
The rebounding department was a key one for the Trappers throughout the evening. Northwest owned a lopsided 63-39 edge on the glass, including a 36-19 edge on the offensive end of the floor.
The disparity helped negate the effects of a 39 percent shooting night from the floor for Northwest College. The Trapper men misfired on all 12 of their shots from behind the 3-point arc.
Little Big Horn had its own struggles, however. Against the Trappers’ defense, the host Rams connected on just 36.6 percent of their shots from the floor.
The win improves the Trapper men to 17-9 on the season. Northwest College is 6-6 in Region IX North play, good for fifth place in the standings.
For the Northwest College women, Leslie Thronburg came up with 16 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double to lead the Trappers to a lopsided win. Northwest surged out to a 54-25 halftime cushion and was never threatened over the final 20 minutes.
The sophomore and Powell native, Thronburg was one of four Trappers to finish in double figures. Imari Simpson came off the bench to also score 16 points in just 14 minutes of court time. Kennedy Allen added 13 points and Andressa Augusto added 11 points.
Defense played a key role for the Trappers, who held Little Big Horn to less than 32 percent shooting for the entire game. That percentage lingered under 30 percent for much of the contest before a late second half volley of shots started falling for the host school.
Equally impressive for the Trappers was the fact that defensive effort was accomplished with a minimal number of fouls being whistled. Northwest was guilty of just 10 fouls in the contest and outscored LBHC 21-6 at the charity stripe.
The victory returns the Northwest College women to the .500 mark at 13-13 overall. The team is also a level 6-6 in Region IX North play, putting them in fifth place in the overall standings.
The Trappers host Casper College on Wednesday night. Opening tip in the women’s game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
