The Northwest College men’s basketball team went toe-to-toe with the best team in its league but could not pull off an upset, falling 89-83 to Sheridan College (29-2) Saturday in its first round Region IX playoff game.
The Trappers got off to a great start Saturday leading by as many as nine points in the first half.
After holding a 48-43 lead at the half the Trappers still led at 9:37 in the second half. From there the Generals went on a 15-2 run over the next 1:43 to take a 73-67 lead.
The Trappers pulled back within three off a Lagio Grantsaan free throw with 3:26 left but that’s as close as Northwest would get as the teams traded shots and free throws for the remainder.
Despite shooting 50 percent from the field the Trappers could not stop the Generals offense, allowing Sheridan to shoot 55 percent from the field.
Calvin Fugett Jr. led Northwest with 28 points, four rebounds and four assists. Reme Torbert had 23 points and four rebounds.
Northwest finishes the season on a 10-game losing streak and a 10-21 record.
