With its 91-84 victory over Central Wyoming College, the Northwest College men’s basketball team secured the Region IX North title and the No. 1 seed heading into the Region IX Tournament.
The Trappers (12-1 Region IX North) host No. 8-seeded Little Big Horn (0-13 Region IX North) in a play-in game on Feb. 28. Region IX is made up of 17 teams divided into North and South divisions. The top four seeds in each division will host the bottom four seeds for play-in games, with eight teams advancing to the quarterfinal round. The South's worst team will not qualify. The quarterfinals, semifinals and championship game will take place on the home floor of the highest seed on March 5-7.
If NWC topples Little Big Horn, the Trappers will host the tournament at Cabre Gym for the first time in school history. If LBH pulls off an upset, Gillette (9-4) would be next in line, and Central Wyoming (9-4) after that.
The Region IX was granted an extra bid this season, meaning the two teams that advance to the region title game will earn a berth in the NJCAA Division I National Basketball Tournament in Hutchinson, Kan., on March 16-21.
