NWC Trapper basketball cracks national rankings

Team Makes Debut At No. 19

After two weeks of lurking just outside of the top 20, the Northwest College men’s basketball team vaulted into the national rankings in the latest poll released by the NJCAA. The question now is how long the Trappers will remain there.

Northwest College received 37 votes — an increase of 11 over the previous week — to sit at No. 19 nationally in the latest poll. That ranking was released Tuesday, the same day the Trapper men began a rigorous stretch of four games in five days.

The first of those games was Tuesday night at Snow College, one of 33 unranked teams to also receive votes in this week’s poll. Snow carried an 8-1 record into that game, but Northwest prevailed by an 88- 82 final count. The Trappers were also scheduled to face No. 9 Salt Lake Community College in a Wednesday night game.

The team will travel from Utah to Nebraska on Thursday before playing a pair of weekend games. The Trappers are at Western Nebraska on Friday. The team wraps up its busy post-holiday stint with a game against Laramie County Community College before finally returning home.

The Trappers were the only Region IX men’s basketball team to earn a spot in this week’s top 20. Three other Region IX teams — Otero, Sheridan and Western Wyoming — did receive votes this week. Neither the NJCAA women’s basketball or wrestling polls updated this week.
