What to Bring and What to Leave Home

What to Bring

Gotta haves:
  • Twin bedding (XL for Simpson and A & C Wings of Lewis & Clark Hall)
  • Bath towel, bathrobe, shower shoes & shower caddy
  • Alarm Clock
  • Phone and/or cell phone
  • UL approved power strip w/surge protector ONLY (NO extension cords!)
  • Laundry supplies (detergent, basket or bag) (Laundry facilities in every hall)
  • Clothes hangers
  • Mending/Sewing Kit
  • General cleaning supplies
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Seasonal clothing (best to exchange at winter)
  • Health insurance or policy information

Leave these at home!

Don't even think about:
  • Extension cords (UL surge protectors ONLY).
  • Window treatments (Fire safety regulations do not permit covering or replacing furnished drapes or blinds).
  • Halogen lamps, lava lamps, etc.
  • Space heaters
  • Candles*, incense, candle warmers, hot oil, or any air freshener that uses a heat source (i.e. Glade plug-in), etc.
  • Appliances with an open or exposed heating element (hot plates, George Foreman grills, BBQ grills, toaster ovens, etc.)
  • Full sized appliances (fridges, freezers, dishwashers, etc.)
  • A/C or window unit. (Self-standing fans only).
  • Pets (except fish—that’s ONLY fish. 10 gallon tank limit).
  • Wireless Routers are NOT allowed!

(*Decorative candles that have never been burned, are wrapped, and/or have wicks removed are okay— please note that even possession of a burnt candle is in violation of our fire safety regulations).

 

It's cool if you have:
  • Personal Computer/Laptop (computer labs available) (You must provide your own paper for hall printers)
  • CAT7 Ethernet cable 
  • TV, DVD/BluRay Player, & Stereo/MP3 dock
  • Mini-fridge (less than 5 cu ft) (available to rent)
  • Microwave (available in kitchen)
  • Food/cooking utensils, small pot/frying pan, etc
  • Coffee pot (auto shut-off)
  • Message/Memo board
  • Fan (your room and most common areas won’t have A/C)
  • Small ironing board and iron (auto shut-off only)
  • Decorations for room (see Decorating 101)
  • Social Security card (if you plan to work on campus)
  • Driver’s License or other ID

 

We don't recommend:
  • Loft kits (limited lofts are available from the hall—any loft or bed raisers that are not checked out from the hall MUST have prior approval from the Resident Director. Simpson Beds already loft.)
  • Family valuables and excessive cash (while we take every measure to ensure the halls are safe, don’t risk losing irreplaceable items.)
  • Nails, duct tape, foam adhesive, or scotch tape as they can and will damage walls and result in a damage assessment (see Decorating 101).

Decorating 101

Bring your posters and pictures and have fun making your room your space, But please follow these guidelines to avoid any damage assessments or violation of hall regulations.

  • Residents cannot paint any part of their rooms. Wallpaper, bordering, stencils, and painting or other additions are not permitted.
  • “Glow in the dark” stickers/stars, poster putty, gel clings, and soap/liquid detergent usually do not remove easily or cleanly from the ceiling or walls of rooms, usually resulting in a damage and/or cleaning charge.
  • Anything that covers the ceiling light, windows, or furnished drapes/blinds is considered a fire hazard. Hang it on the wall instead.
  • LED lights (for example Christmas lights) are the ONLY types of decorative lights allowed.
  • Bottle collections, caps, or any other “monument” to alcohol are not permitted (neon signs, bar mirrors, shot glasses, etc).
  • Offensive materials may not be posted on doors, in windows, or in another publicly viewed space.
  • Residents may bring additional furniture but are fully responsible for any damages caused by moving or using the furniture and may be asked to remove the item(s) if it interferes with safe egress of the room. Furnished items may NOT be removed from the room.

How To Avoid A Sticky Situation

Certain products work better than others on the residence hall room walls and surfaces.
We recommend using 3M COMMAND strips and hooks as they will not damage the walls when used correctly.

*Residents are responsible for all room damages, regardless of product used. Care and caution should be used when hanging items on the wall.

All residence hall rooms are completely furnished with twin beds, mattresses, bookshelves, chairs, wardrobes, desks, drapes or blinds, wastebasket, and a mirror. Each room also has cable TV access (service included), Ethernet ports, and a phone jack for local calls. Wireless internet is also available in each Residence Hall. So what do you need to bring? Read on! Don’t forget to check with your roommate before bringing larger items
